Here's how Week 1 went for us and Dayton...
~Tuesday, April 8
- Baby Dayton was born at 7:25 pm! 7 pounds 3 ounces and 20 inches long
- Visitors: Grandpa and Grandma Bishop and Beth and Gene. Brad's family lives pretty close, so as soon as Grandpa and Grandma heard we were having a baby, they jumped in the car and made the 2 hour drive. Everyone arrived only a few minutes after Dayton was born.
- Mommy and Daddy had some alone time with Dayton. We had some skin-to-skin bonding time, practiced nursing, and enjoyed being a family of 3 for about an hour.
- Beth and Gene stayed for a while, but then headed home. Grandma and Grandpa Bishop stayed at our house, took care of the pups, and came back the next day.
- The hubs slept on the uncomfortable pullout couch and tossed and turned all night. I was stuck in bed because of my surgery and catheter. Dayton slept in the bassinet next to me and it was pretty hard to get him in and out all night. I think I only got an hour of sleep between nursing, soothing, and cuddling Dayton. It was wonderful though. I was tired, obviously, but loved every second of it...well, maybe not all the pain.

- Mommy and Daddy spent the morning with Dayton. It was still sinking in that our little man was here!
- Our neighbors, Sarah and her daughter Meara, came to visit because they happened to be going to Meara's appointment at Covenant. It was nice to see them! They only stayed for a few minutes.
- At some point in the morning, the nurses came to "unhook" me so that I would be free to shower and move around. I did have to keep my IV needle in my arm for pain medications, etc.
- Grandma and Grandpa came to visit later that morning and stayed until late in the afternoon.
- The hubs and I enjoyed our afternoon with Dayton and just kept loving on him.
- Dayton's pediatrician visited and little man got checked up and circumcised.
- I was able to take a shower and clean up. It felt great!
- Later that night our friends, Kate and Ryan, came to visit and meet Dayton.
- Then my 2nd grade team came to bring my work shower presents and meet Dayton. It was so nice to see them! Love those girls!!
- Wednesday night went much better for Dayton and I. We started getting the hang of nursing and I actually got some sleep!
- Dayton was born 3 weeks early, so the lactation consultant said his sucking reflex wasn't quite developed and he was having a little bit of trouble because he was "acting his age." Makes sense!

- Dayton and I were doing great, so we asked my Doctor if we could go home that day instead of on Friday. Dr. G said that was fine since I was feeling good and Dayton was now nursing pretty well.
- The nurses started their paperwork and discharge list. It felt like it took forever, but we enjoyed eating lunch, I showered and cleaned up, and we snuggled Dayton all that we wanted!
- Visitors: our friends, the Randalls, came to visit us Thursday afternoon before we left the hospital.
- Around 3:00 pm, we finally got to leave! We had to stop by Target on our way home to get a few baby items that we still needed and had been waiting for all of our showers to be over before getting. Dayton's first Target visit!
- Once we were home, we unpacked and just enjoyed being home!!

Randalls / Time to go home! |
- Mommy and Daddy kept adjusting to being new parents. Dayton slept in a co-sleeper bassinet in our room. Dayton was sleeping and eating about every 2-3 hours at night.
- Visitors: Diane (a family friend) and Jeff and Tami.
- Dayton is really a good baby and we cannot complain at all! He eats well and sleeps well. He's a very content baby. The only time he has cried is when he is hungry. Just love him to pieces!!
- Saturday afternoon, the hubs dropped me and Dayton off at my school and I met with my long-term sub to discuss just a few things, and he ran some errands. We were out for about 2 hours. Dayton slept in his car seat the whole time I was at school. Such a good baby.
- Saturday night we met our friends at a small local restaurant because it was Tami's birthday. We enjoyed dinner and Dayton slept for almost 5 hours. I had tried to feed him before we left, but he didn't want to wake up so we put him in his car seat and he slept until we got home!
- Dayton was now sleeping 3 hours between eating at night.
- My milk came in today and I have had to pump every 3 hours on top of nursing!
- We enjoyed a lazy day at home working on a schedule and enjoying our little bug!
- During nursing, I accidentally scratched Dayton's head with my long nails...MOTY (mother of the year).
- Visitors: Kate and Ryan came over around lunch time with lasagna! Lunch was delicious and we had a great time hanging out with our friends!
- Nothing too exciting. Mommy and Dayton worked on a schedule and Daddy worked on putting the finishing touches on the nursery.
- Dayton had his newborn assessment today at the hospital. He is still 6 pounds 11 ounces and everything looks good and he is healthy! We couldn't be more happy.
- Dayton eats every 2 hours and is getting pretty good at nursing! Mommy is starting to feel like a cow. Ha! However, I am extremely happy that nursing is going so well and that my milk supply is building up so nicely! I am still having to pump every 3 hours as well as nurse every 2 hours. I am pretty impressed with how much milk I have! Such a relief.
- Today, Dayton is one week old. I can't believe how quickly it was flown by already.
- Dayton is a nursing champ and I am adjusting really well. I haven't experienced that much soreness and I am really happy with the supply I have already built from pumping.
- Visitors: Matt (Brad's brother), Karen, Abby, and Jax came to visit. It was so nice to see them and we were glad they were able to visit right after they got back from vacation! Karen took some gorgeous Newborn Photos of Dayton.
- During the photo shoot, I got pooped on while I was nursing Dayton back to sleep, Abby pointed out that Dayton was peeing during one photo, Daddy was holding Dayton when the pee fountain started again, and then Daddy got pooped on during a daddy/son photo! Hi-lar-ious!! We were all laughing so hard the hubs and I shed tears. Welcome to parenthood!!
- See the photos here.
- After our family left, we went to our church small group. All the ladies loved Baby D and couldn't get enough of him!
- What a busy day!!
Nursing: Nursing is going really well. Dayton was born on Tuesday and got a good latch on Wednesday night. It was a little rough up until then. I had to hand express and then spoon feed after we tried to get him latch for the first night and day. My milk came in on Friday night and I thought my poor boobs were going to explode. Thankfully, pumping as well as nursing is going really well and I have already started to build my supply. I am so thankful that everything is going so well. The other night, I pumped after I nursed Dayton and got out 10 ounces! Holy milk. I know this will slow down, but it's such a relief so far!
Eating: Dayton is eating every 2 hours during the day. I like to call him little piggie...because he eats so much! and because he makes these hilarious grunting piggie noises right before he latches on. Cracks us up! He really is a good eater for being 3 weeks early. He was able to get a good latch on Wednesday night after he was born. I was a proud Momma. From what I am pumping, I think he is eating about 2-3 ounces each feeding...maybe more. I am hoping that Dayton will be back at his birth weight at his 2 weeks appointment.
Sleeping: Dayton sleeps after each feeding. He is such a content baby! He eats and then he sleeps. All day and most of the night. He is sleeping about 3-4 hour blocks at night by Monday night. I am one lucky Momma!
Activity: Dayton responds to my voice and his Daddy's voice and turns his head to us. It is so sweet! He does not have a ton of activity yet, and he doesn't even cry that much. He really is a happy baby. He does get the hiccups a ton and I can't help but laugh at his little body jumping when he gets them!
Small Moments: My favorite moments are when I am nursing. I love the skin-to-skin and I love snuggling with my little man. I am enjoying it much more than I thought I would. It has become my favorite time of the day! When little man gets done eating and looks up at me...my heart melts. Mommy loves you so much bug!!
