Hunting season is finally here! The hubs and I have been counting down and getting ready for opening weekend. The first season for deer is bow, so we made plans to go down to camp. Our friends, Kasey and Brett Randall, have a lot of land down in southern Iowa - the best hunting land around. There's a house on their land as well, so there was plenty of room for our little fam, Brad's parents, and some of the Randall's family members. We left for camp on Friday and spent Saturday and Sunday hunting. The land was beautiful, we were out in the middle of no where (which we were very happy about), the weather was beautiful, and there was plenty to do when we weren't hunting.
Saturday morning, the hubs and I were up at 4:30 am to get ready to go out. We showered using scent-away shampoo, conditioner, and soap. We also used scent-away deodorant and toothpaste. Ha! After we got all of our layers and camo on, we headed out to our double stand. It was about 45 degrees, but we kept pretty warm. We were up in the stand by 5:45 am but we had to wait until about 6:15 before it was legal shooting time. Saturday morning, we saw a young buck (I had a shot but decided not to use my antler tag on a little guy), two tom turkeys, a ton of squirrels, and two does. Brad had a shot on one of the does, but she was a bit too far away.
Saturday afternoon we went four wheeling, sat around in the sun, and took a few practice shots. While I was shooting at a target, my arrows went over the target and down to the left. They were definitely not hitting where they were supposed to be. That's when we found out my bow was broken. Worst luck ever. However, I was lucky when Brett told me that he had an extra bow. Yes! Brett had his brother's bow, so I took a few shots and was back in business. We didn't even have to adjust it. Whew. I would have been SO bummed if I wasn't able to hunt the rest of the weekend.
Saturday afternoon, we were back in a different stand by 5 pm. That night we saw two does that never even came close to us and one doe who did get close, but she didn't get close enough. I had stood up and clipped my release and was about to draw when she turned around and walked away.
Sunday morning we were up around the same time and out to a new stand before it was light out. It was the same story Sunday morning. We saw two different does from far away and two does who did come into the clearing but not close enough. One doe was about 35 yards away and I was up and ready to shoot, but instead of walking closer to us, she walked away. Ugh! Oh well, we had a great time anyways!! Oh and if you ever wondered, this is what I look like without makeup on. ;)
Thank you to the Randalls for hosting us on your land! We had an amazing weekend!! and we can't wait until next time! Also, we want to say thank you to grandma and grandpa Bishop for driving all the way out to camp and for watching Dayton! We had so much fun hanging out with you both and hope you had a great weekend too!
Until next time... Next up? Muzzle loader. Can't wait!
