A Buck, or Two

Hunting season is here! and the hubby is getting out into the woods as often as he can. I was able to go hunting on the season opener (here), but with a new baby and a busy toddler it was just too hard to try and go again. The hubs, however, took every chance he got to go hunting.

It paid off. The year he shot a doe and two bucks! Both of which he mounted. Well done babe!

Hunting Season Opener

It's here! Hunting season is finally here. For bow opening weekend, we planned to be down at camp so that I could get at least one hunt in this year. Grandma and Grandpa Bishop came as well to watch the boys and spend some time with us. The weather was amazing, but a little too warm. The hubs and I were able to go out and hunt Saturday morning, Saturday night and Sunday morning. Saturday morning we saw three does about 15 minutes before shooting light and then we didn't see or hear a thing after that. That sucked, but it was totally worth it to be outside, in the woods, up in a stand, with my bow ready. I love being out in the woods.

November Hunting

Oh hunting. Once the fall comes, the hubs pretty much eats, sleeps, and breathes hunting - but not in a bad way. We planned the weekends that we would head down to camp together or just Brad alone. One weekend, the hubs and I were able to get away together, alone, for the weekend while mom and dad Bishop watched Dayton. It was nice to get away to camp and just spend some time together doing something that we love! Bow season is much longer than the others, so the hubs and I both bow hunted this weekend.

It was cold, but wasn't too horrible. We saw some deer, but not as many as we were hoping. Saturday morning we hunted together in a double stand and saw a few does, but none of them came close enough. Saturday night we hunted separate stands. Brad saw about eight deer and I saw three, but none of mine came anywhere close. Bummer! Sunday morning, we hunted at one of our favorite double stands. We didn't see anything almost all morning and then all of a sudden, two does came trotting through the woods. I stood up and got my bow ready while the hubs did the same. We were kind of back to back so we both had opposite angels. At this point, I was shivering so badly because I was so cold and it made it pretty hard to draw my bow. I made a rookie mistake and didn't have my clip completely secure on my release. An arrow slipped through and shot about 20 yards away. Ugh. Lame. Brad ended up getting a shot at one of the does. She ran off and after a few minutes, we got out of the tree stand to track her. We found her about 50 yards away in the woods. She was dead. Good shot hon! We did our thing and brought her back to the camp to get the meat.

Although I didn't get anything, I'd say it was a successful weekend! Good shot hon!

Hunting Season

Hunting season is finally here! The hubs and I have been counting down and getting ready for opening weekend. The first season for deer is bow, so we made plans to go down to camp. Our friends, Kasey and Brett Randall, have a lot of land down in southern Iowa - the best hunting land around. There's a house on their land as well, so there was plenty of room for our little fam, Brad's parents, and some of the Randall's family members. We left for camp on Friday and spent Saturday and Sunday hunting. The land was beautiful, we were out in the middle of no where (which we were very happy about), the weather was beautiful, and there was plenty to do when we weren't hunting.

Saturday morning, the hubs and I were up at 4:30 am to get ready to go out. We showered using scent-away shampoo, conditioner, and soap. We also used scent-away deodorant and toothpaste. Ha! After we got all of our layers and camo on, we headed out to our double stand. It was about 45 degrees, but we kept pretty warm. We were up in the stand by 5:45 am but we had to wait until about 6:15 before it was legal shooting time. Saturday morning, we saw a young buck (I had a shot but decided not to use my antler tag on a little guy), two tom turkeys, a ton of squirrels, and two does. Brad had a shot on one of the does, but she was a bit too far away.

Saturday afternoon we went four wheeling, sat around in the sun, and took a few practice shots. While I was shooting at a target, my arrows went over the target and down to the left. They were definitely not hitting where they were supposed to be. That's when we found out my bow was broken. Worst luck ever. However, I was lucky when Brett told me that he had an extra bow. Yes! Brett had his brother's bow, so I took a few shots and was back in business. We didn't even have to adjust it. Whew. I would have been SO bummed if I wasn't able to hunt the rest of the weekend.

Saturday afternoon, we were back in a different stand by 5 pm. That night we saw two does that never even came close to us and one doe who did get close, but she didn't get close enough. I had stood up and clipped my release and was about to draw when she turned around and walked away.

Sunday morning we were up around the same time and out to a new stand before it was light out. It was the same story Sunday morning. We saw two different does from far away and two does who did come into the clearing but not close enough. One doe was about 35 yards away and I was up and ready to shoot, but instead of walking closer to us, she walked away. Ugh! Oh well, we had a great time anyways!! Oh and if you ever wondered, this is what I look like without makeup on. ;)

Thank you to the Randalls for hosting us on your land! We had an amazing weekend!! and we can't wait until next time! Also, we want to say thank you to grandma and grandpa Bishop for driving all the way out to camp and for watching Dayton! We had so much fun hanging out with you both and hope you had a great weekend too!

Until next time... Next up? Muzzle loader. Can't wait!

Bow Hunting

This year, both the hubs and I will be hunting. The first season of the year is bow. The hubs got me a bow earlier this year and I've been practicing ever since. One shot and I was addicted. A few weeks after I got my bow, the hubs got a new one too. We'll be hunting on one of our friend's (and neighbor) land down in southern Iowa. We're two weeks away from opening weekend!

Since our friend is a neighbor and he has a field and woods behind his house, we like to head down there at night and practice shooting our bows. Dayton is usually with us, so while one of us is shooting the other has Dayton in the swing which is far away and behind where we are practicing. I've been shooting for a few weeks and so far I'm not too shabby! We definitely have a new hobby.

My second time shooting  |  Dayton and Taylor at the swing  |  practice
target practice  |  he loves the swing  |  my best shot - bullseye
That picture of the arrows on the top right? Yeah, that bulls eye is mine and the arrow on the right is the hubs. We were "competing" shot for shot. This girl won that round. Woohoo!

Wish us luck!!

Hunting Trip 2014

The first weekend in December is opening season for shotgun. This year we had talked about the hubs and I going, but we decided to wait another year to spend the money getting my shotgun. This year, the guys in our small group made a guys weekend out of it. Six guys went, but only three of them hunted. I was happy to have the weekend with my little man while the hubs was out with the guys! He rarely gets a guys trip, so I was excited that he was able to do this.

True to form, the hubs snagged a doe. He was hoping to get one of the monster bucks that is roaming the hunting land they were on, but he didn't see one. One of the other guys saw one of the bucks, but he didn't shoot him. Next year, hon! Here's a few photos of his trip. Good job love. Deer meat for another year!

Mr. Hunter Man

If you're squeamish or a supporter of PITA, this is not the post for you. Just a forewarning!  This post is about hunting and includes photos of my husband's deer.

Hunting. My husband is now a hunter. A few weekends ago (I'm a bit behind), my hubby went hunting in southern Iowa with one of our friends. Our friend and his family own over 1000 acres of land in southern Iowa (great hunting grounds) and have a cabin on the land along with a shed, multiple deer stands, video cameras, and plenty of hunting equipment. This was Brad's first hunting trip and I was so excited for him! If I hadn't been pregnant, I probably would have gone with him. My daddy is a hunter and I used to go with him when I was little. I would hike all over the mountains with him, help him gut the deer, and he would let me shoot at targets when we were done. I loved it. So, I was happy when Brad said he wanted to get into hunting. Deer meat! Can't get much leaner than that.

Brad left Friday night, spent the night at the cabin, and went hunting at 5 am in the morning. Apparently it was wicked cold and they didn't see a thing. The guys went back out later that afternoon and Brad shot 2 deer! Him and Brett were in a deer stand when Brad got his first. Within 10 minutes a second deer came and Brad got that one too. Brett got both kills on video, so I got to see the hubs in action when he got back.

I'm glad that Brad got his guys weekend and that he had a successful first hunting trip! You go baby! I was one proud wifey and can't wait till he brings home some more!
