Sick Babe

My poor babe got sick again. I mean, seriously, it's summer! The only thing I can think of is that he may have picked something up at the church nursery. Bummer. Oh well. A week of high fevers and sweet, sick, cuddly little boy is what we got!

Monday morning, Dayton woke up and ate just fine. Mid-morning I thought that he felt a tiny bit warm, but assumed it the four teeth that he is working on right now. We ran some errands and went to the gym that morning and when we got home it was lunch time. Poor little guy could hardly keep his eyes open and he didn't eat much at all. I took his temperature because now he definitely felt warm. It was 102. Poor kiddo. I put him down for nap and he slept for three and a half hours! When he woke up he had a 103 degree temperature. I started thinking it may be an ear infection, but he had no other symptoms! No runny nose, no coughing, no nothing - just a high temperature.

We made him as comfortable as we could, I used all of my oils on him and nothing. I gave him Tylenol that night and put him down to bed early. When he woke up with a 102 temperature on Tuesday, I made a doctor's appointment to make sure he was okay. His temperatures were a little high and not coming down.

Our doctor examined him and found...a sore throat. Yep. However, the rapid test showed it was negative for strep. Whew! His lungs sounded good, his ears looked fine, he did not have a runny nose or any drainage. Our doctor did tell me to continue the Tylenol since his throat was very red and had mucus. He also advised me to continue to monitor his temperature (because of a virus that was going around) and to call if anything changed.

The rest of Tuesday just got worse. Dayton wouldn't let me put him down. He was lethargic and just wanted to lay on me, which I was happy to let him do. He took a four hour nap!! and when he woke up his temperature was 104. I called Brad and asked him to get children's Motrin on his way home since Tylenol was clearly not working. I called the doctor's office to talk to a nurse about his high temperature. She suggested the Motrin and to just make him comfortable.

his only spot
When Brad got home, Dayton's temperature was 105.5 degrees. When I saw that, I about freaked out. We put him in the bathtub with lukewarm water to help cool him down (I read later on that this actually doesn't work). He was not happy with the bath and was just getting all worked up, so I undressed and got in with him. He laid on me and was actually clinging to me. Poor poor baby! It completely broke my heart. I had Brad call our doctor, who happened to be on call. He said that he was pretty sure that Dayton had that virus that he had mentioned earlier - sixths disease or Roseola (you can read about it here). Dr. C said that the high fevers would last about a week and then he would get a rash. When we saw the rash, we would know that he was a day away from being better. Great.

what we did all week
He was right. Dayton's temperature stayed around 102-103 all week. It finally broke on Thursday afternoon and Dayton got a few spots on Friday morning. Sixths disease is in the books. Good as new by Friday!
