Recently I was told about a sweet little girl named, Lily Grace. A girl I work with goes to the same church as Lily's family. One morning after I had finished pumping, my friend happened to walk into my room. She is also nursing and we started talking about breastfeeding and our supplies. I mentioned to her that we had an overabundance of breast milk at home and didn't have any more room to store it (our deep freeze is full, our freezer is full, and our refrigerator is full). We had been discussing bringing some extra milk to the milk bank at our local hospital. That's when she told me about Lily.
Lily has SMA - Spinal Muscular Atrophy. You can learn more about SMA here. My heart was broken when I learned about this sweet baby girl. I cannot imagine the pain that her parents go through as they love and care for their angel each and every day. Lily is now 15 months old. Infants with SMA do not have a long life expectancy. As of now, Lily is on a breast milk diet. Lily's mama nursed her for as long as possible and recently had to stop pumping due to low supply. As soon as my friend told me about Lily, I knew exactly how we could help - God laid this little girl heavily on my heart. We have been so blessed when it comes to breastfeeding and I knew that we could bless others. I was able to contact Lily's aunt and we were able to donate about 100 bags of breast milk to Lily Grace and her family. We plan to continue to donate milk to her family for as long as we can. I know that God has given us a gift and we want to give back to others in any way that we can.
Why tell you about this? Researchers and doctors are getting closer to a cure for SMA.
Learning about kiddos like Lily really make you stop and thank the Lord that we have a healthy baby. I don't wake up every morning worrying about Dayton. I know he is safe and healthy. I also know that that could change at any moment as well. I've had a few friends recently that have gone through some very hard things with their babies. It makes me pray more, hold my baby tight, and thank God every day for all of our health. Please continue to pray for Lily and her family. The picture posted above was recently shared by Lily's mom. Now that's a woman of faith.
